Frequently asked questions about making an urgent appointment with a specialist

Do you have questions about making an urgent appointment with a specialist? We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed, you can of course always contact us.

Can your GP make an urgent appointment with the specialist if the waiting time is very long?

We can only make an urgent appointment if there is a medical indication for urgency. If there is an indication for urgency, the GP will already have stated this in the referral. So there is no point in calling the GP again about this. It is advisable to let the outpatient clinic at the hospital know that you are available if someone cancels their appointment. This way, you may be able to take a slot that becomes free. Contact the outpatient clinic to let them know you are available. Another option is to ask another hospital whether they have a shorter waiting time. If so, we can transfer the referral to that hospital. It is important that you first check the expected waiting time with the other hospital yourself. Please bear in mind that we will only transfer a referral to another hospital once because of waiting times. Please note: it is up to the patient to find out the waiting times at other hospitals. We advise you to be proactive and gather this information yourself before contacting our practice.
