Scientific research
Participant in Rijnmond Gezond
Our practice makes data available for scientific research by Erasmus MC (the university medical centre in Rotterdam), to improve care for people in the Netherlands and the Rijnmond region.
Why this research?
This research requires medical data from many thousands of patients over a long period. It is based on the data your GP records when you visit. Your name and address are known only to your GP; the researcher cannot see which patient the data comes from.
The research is carried out by the departments of Medical Informatics and General Practice at Erasmus MC. Medical Informatics focuses on the whole of the Netherlands, under the name IPCI (Integrated Primary Care Information). General Practice focuses on the Rijnmond region, under the name Rijnmond Gezond. Both use the same data, but answer different questions.
Examples of research questions
- Do complaints disappear with a medicine, and how quickly?
- How many and which side effects do different medicines have?
- Do children in the most polluted neighbourhoods of Rijnmond have physical complaints more often?
- What are the risk factors for common conditions?
Your data
We are not allowed to simply share your data. It is protected by the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG, the Dutch name for the GDPR) and the Medical Treatment Contracts Act (WGBO). Your name, address, place of residence and BSN are never passed on to the researchers.
Want to object?
Do you object to your data being used for this research? Let your GP or the doctor’s assistant know. Your data will then not be used.
