Frequently asked questions about GP care and costs

Do you have questions about GP care and costs? We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed, you can of course always contact us.

Do I have to pay the GP costs myself?

No. If you have Dutch health insurance, your health insurer will pay your GP's bill directly, without any involvement from you. If you do not have Dutch health insurance, you will have to pay the costs directly to the GP at an adjusted rate for visiting patients (passantentarief).
If you are not registered as a regular patient at our practice but you do have a Dutch health insurer, we will assess on an individual basis whether we can claim the visiting patient rate directly or whether you will first have to pay this adjusted rate yourself (and claim it from your health insurer yourself).

If inserting a medicinal implant (such as an IUD or contraceptive implant) does not succeed or does not go well, will the practice reimburse the costs?

No, the practice cannot be held responsible for this. Inserting an IUD or contraceptive implant is a medical procedure in which there is always a small chance that the insertion does not succeed or that the implant does not end up in the right place. This falls under the normal medical risk of the treatment. If the implant cannot be used as a result, a new one will have to be ordered at the patient's expense. If the medication is covered by your health insurance, you can claim the costs again from your health insurer.
In principle, this amount will be charged to your deductible (eigen risico) if you have not yet used up your deductible

No deductible for a visit to the GP?

Your health insurer covers the care you receive from your GP. A visit to the GP does not count towards your compulsory deductible (eigen risico).
However, the GP may need to do additional tests, for example blood tests or X-rays to assess what care you need. This care does count towards your compulsory deductible. The same applies to the medicines that a GP prescribes.

Would you like to know exactly how much you will be reimbursed for things like medicines and blood tests?

It is best to ask your health insurer, because it depends a great deal on which health insurance policy you have taken out.

How much do additional tests cost?

Additional laboratory tests will be charged to you until you have used up your deductible (eigen risico). Star-SHL has published a clear price list on its website. Using the following link, you can look up what you will be charged for each test: Rates (star-shl.nl)
Rates for additional tests such as X-rays, vascular tests, MRI scans etc. are less easy to look up. These tests will also be deducted from your deductible first. Once your deductible has been used up, these costs are usually fully reimbursed. Check with your health insurer whether there is a personal contribution for additional tests after all.

Are the costs of the huisartsenpost reimbursed?

Care at the huisartsenpost (out-of-hours GP service) is fully reimbursed. This care also does not count towards your compulsory deductible.

Does the registration fee on the GP's bill count towards the deductible?

On your healthcare bill you will also see fees from your GP. These costs also do not count towards your deductible and are paid by your insurer directly to the GP.
The quarterly registration fee you see on your bill is made up of several payments. These payments follow from rates agreed by contract with the health insurer for extra services that we provide as a GP practice, such as certain chronic care or investments that improve the quality of our care.

I received a bill for my visit to the GP after all. How is that possible?

The GP consultation is fully reimbursed and does not count towards your deductible.
However, medication prescribed by the GP and additional tests (such as blood tests, cultures, X-rays or ultrasound scans) do count towards your deductible. In addition, certain procedures at the GP (such as inserting an IUD) are fully reimbursed by most health insurers and do not count towards your deductible, but this is not the case with all health insurers. Some health insurers do not follow the standard contracts. So always check your policy conditions carefully and, if in doubt, contact your health insurer.
