Frequently asked questions about the GP referral letter

Do you have questions about the GP referral letter? We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed, you can of course always contact us.

When do I need a referral letter from the GP?

For specialist care, such as in hospitals, you need a referral letter from your GP. However, the GP will always first assess together with you whether a specialist consultation is needed for your question. That is why the GP will first invite you to explain the complaints for which you want to see a specialist.

When does the GP give a referral letter for specialist care?

The GP only refers you if it is medically necessary. A referral will be refused if the GP is convinced that it would not be useful. In that case, the GP will clearly explain why no referral letter is being given.
So it is not the case that you are entitled to a referral to a specialist.

What happens if I seek specialist care without a referral letter?

If you do not have a valid referral letter and still go to a specialist, you may have to pay for the treatment yourself. It is also possible that you will only be treated once the correct referral has been obtained.

Do I need a referral letter if I want to pay for the treatment myself?

No, if you are prepared to pay for the treatment yourself, you do not need a referral. However, it is important to know that you cannot claim the costs from your health insurer if you decide to pay yourself.

Do I need a new referral if I have already been treated by a specialist and want a new appointment?

If you are still being treated by the specialist for the same complaint and you want to make a new appointment yourself, you do not need a new referral. This also applies if your last appointment was quite some time ago.
You only need a new referral if the specialist has completed the treatment and you have been referred back to the GP. The specialist's letter to the GP should state that the specialist's care has been concluded.

Are there healthcare providers for whom I do not need a referral letter?

Yes, for some care, such as physiotherapy, exercise therapy, dental hygiene, skin therapy, dietetics, occupational therapy, speech therapy and podiatry, you do not need a referral letter. However, it is advisable to check with your health insurer about reimbursement for this care and any policy conditions.
