Frequently asked questions about second opinions
Do you have questions about a second opinion? We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed, you can of course always contact us.
How can I request a second opinion in healthcare?
If you have doubts about a diagnosis or treatment, you can request a second opinion. Discuss your considerations with your treating doctor/specialist first, before taking any further steps.
Do I need to involve my GP when requesting a second opinion?
No, for a medical problem for which you are (or have been) treated by a medical specialist, you should request the second opinion from that same specialist. This process can take place without the involvement of the GP. Your treating specialist provides the necessary information to the consulting specialist.
Do I need a referral for a second opinion?
Yes, for a second opinion you need a referral from your treating doctor / specialist. Your doctor will comply with your request, unless there are serious arguments against it. In that case, your doctor will explain this to you, giving reasons. So you do not need to request a referral through the GP for this!
Is a second opinion reimbursed by my health insurer?
Many health insurers only reimburse a second opinion if it was requested through a referral from your treating doctor. If you arrange a second opinion yourself, not all costs may be reimbursed by your health insurer. Check the policy conditions of your health insurance for any additional conditions, such as a requirement for prior approval.
Are there specific conditions for reimbursement of a second opinion?
Yes, always check with your health insurer about the exact conditions for reimbursement of a second opinion. Some insurers apply additional conditions, such as a requirement for approval. It is important to find out this information in advance to avoid unnecessary costs.
