Frequently asked questions about referral arrangements

Do you have questions about referral arrangements? We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed, you can of course always contact us. Also see the rules in the Netherlands on referral arrangements on the website of the Ministry of Health.

Is a new referral needed if a medical specialist finds a different problem from the one you were originally referred for?

No. If a patient is being treated by a specialist and a new care need is identified during a consultation, the specialist may refer the patient to themselves or to another specialist. This must be recorded in the medical file and reported to the GP by letter. If a patient experiences further complaints at home that are not related to the care need for which they are being treated in the hospital or clinic, the patient must go to the GP for a new referral.

Can a medical specialist refer me to another medical specialist without involving the GP?

Yes, that is allowed. If a medical specialist identifies a new care need, they can refer to the other specialty themselves. This applies regardless of whether the new care need is related to the original care need.

Can a medical specialist refer on to another clinic or hospital?

Yes, that is allowed. If the patient needs to be referred to another healthcare organisation, the medical specialist can make this referral. For a referral from secondary to tertiary care, no referral from the GP is needed; the referral comes from the medical specialist.
