How does requesting and fitting an IUD work?

- Appointment for information (if needed): If you have never had an IUD before and would like information about the type of IUD that suits you best, you can make an appointment (digital, by phone or in person) with one of the doctors.

- STI screening: If there is a chance of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it is advisable to rule out the STIs chlamydia and gonorrhoea first.

- Prescription and naproxen tablet: If you decide you want the IUD, the practice will prescribe the IUD and you will receive a prescription for a naproxen tablet, which you need to take one hour before the insertion to reduce uterine cramps.

- Collecting from the pharmacy: You collect the IUD and the tablet from the pharmacy yourself. You may need to pay for the IUD at the pharmacy counter. If you are insured for it, you can submit the bill to your insurer.

- Insertion appointment: For the insertion, a double consultation is scheduled at the end of the consultation session. The actual insertion usually takes 5-10 minutes.

- After the insertion: After the insertion you can go home. Uterine cramps can sometimes occur. To relieve these cramps, you can take paracetamol. If needed, and once the naproxen you took earlier has worn off, ibuprofen or naproxen can also be considered as additional pain relief.
