General Practitioner
In the Netherlands, the huisarts (general practitioner, GP) plays a central role in health care. Your GP is your first stop for any medical treatment, whatever doctor you may eventually need.
A Dutch GP is trained to provide many treatments for which you may be used to seeing a hospital specialist in your home country.
Referral to hospital
If your GP refers you to a hospital, the specialist keeps your GP informed about your medical problems. Your GP therefore holds all your medical information and is the only one in the system who is in contact with all the medical institutions you visit. Without a referral from your GP, it is very difficult to make an appointment with a specialist. If you have Dutch health insurance, your insurer may not reimburse the costs without a referral.
Register close to home
We recommend registering with a GP close to your home once you know where you will be living. This makes it easier for you to visit the practice, and for the doctor to visit you if your medical condition prevents you from coming to the practice.
Not insured in the Netherlands?
We only accept patients with Dutch basic health insurance. Without basic insurance you can register with Jans Huisartsen (Kralingen and city centre) or IHCR. They treat your questions and medical situation confidentially and with care, and their GPs and staff speak English well.
Registering with our practice
We are temporarily open for new registrations for residents of Kralingen (postcodes 3061, 3062 and part of 3063; not De Esch and Nieuw-Kralingen). Due to high demand, we only register patients who do not yet have a GP in Kralingen.
Please complete our registration form and include a copy of your ID.
